Ashitare's Page

Welcome to my Ashitare page. Ashitare is undoubtedly the brawn of the Seiryuu seishi, he is the one sent to do the dirty work when senseless and merciless killing is needed. We don't really know enough about this character to really feel for him or really hate him (well, okay there is ONE definate scene where you hate him). Our only hint as to his background is the knowledge that he was raised (born in?) a penal colony and eventually ended up in a travelling freak show. That is where Nakago found him (and consequently freed him from) upon realizing his seishi identity.

Opinion
I received an email from a visitor on the subject of Ashitare. She posed a very interesting (to me at least) theory about Ashitare and his character, etc. I've reprinted the entire theory here (with her permission) for your perusal. She, Windseeker, is interested in hearing any comments on her theory. Here it is:

"Now, I'm rather partial to werewolves, but even if I weren't I think Ashitare would intrigue me because he's so very different from the rest of the seishi. All of the others, even the bad-to-the-bone ones like Nakago, have reasons why they are the way they are and why they do the things they do. Ashitare, on the other hand, is presented as nothing but a monster, no background, nothing to tell us how he got that way.

In every werewolf story I've ever encountered, there's always part of the werewolf that is human and trying to fight their curse. Ashitare's lycanthropy is not a curse (at least, I doubt that Seiryuu intended it that way), but even so, I like the idea that some part of him is a scared kid who lost control of the monster inside him. I think perhaps Ashitare started off as a human being like the other seishi, but he grew up in an abusive family, or was beaten and/or made to do horrible things by the people running the freak show he wound up in, until he just lost it. Being in Nakago's care later on probably didn't help any, either. "
